And just to reiterate, you can play a wrestler that relies on counter attacking.. You just have to be careful and not to end up implementing the kind of scenario's mentioned...

That explanation was much better. Rules and RP guidelines are better if they are clear, for everyone '-'
EDIT: If I sounded defensive, or maybe "hostile", please note that it wasn't my intention. I don't even RP defensive characters, but I find that if the law enforcement hammer is ready to be cast upon people things should be written as clear as possible.

I would just like to say, on the "attempting" thingy, it's not really bad if you do it and word it the right way.
Example:
Tai goes to kick Kairi in the gut, Kairi catches his kick, I decided I want Tai to attempt an enzuguri
Now, just typing "Tai attempts an enziguri" would be kinda blah, as it doesn't say much and the opponent usually has to let it happen because there is no given alternative.
However, if I put something like
"Tai, straightening his free leg and jumping, would attempt to swing his free leg around to try an enzuguri,
if the attempt was succesfule/connected, his foot would connect with the side of Kairi's head.
If it was unsuccesful/missed, Tai would fall to his stomach, leg still in Kairi's grasp"
Then it comes off alot better, as for one thing, I'm not controlling what my opponent is doing, as I'm only saying how Tai is affected. He could hit the kick and still be caught, if Kairi is strong enough or something.
On top of that, it also gives control of the decision to the person playing Kairi.
I'm not saying that Tai's move is certain to hit, it could hit or miss, but I'm saying what the effect to Tai himself would be if one or the other happened and it's up to my opponent to decide if his attempt should succeed or not, as well as up to them what their character's reaction should be. They could let the kick succeed and let go or hold on, or duck under it and go from there.
Either way, their character isn't out of their control and they aren't being forced into a decision without their input.

I'd just like to point out that my biggest pet peeve with people's writing is when they write everything in the conditional tense, as if we're just discussing some hypothetical situation and not telling a story.

The if-then-else makes me want to claw my screen. I know it is not supering, I just hate it... it feels so artificial, so unnatural. It totally kills the narrative rhythm.

Well obviously the "attempting" or as you put it, conditional, writing has its flaws and isn't meant to be used all the time.
However, at the same time, done the way described, it's non offensive to most players and can be used in certain situations.
Plus, not all of us are all that great at writing a story.
