It is half maximizing half seting up how you can rp your character easily. My current character is Cha based, but my heritage is hermit with one plot being I am awkward in major social situations like with high ranking nobility. My flaw I semi custom made it that my character sometimes will leave out info of reports and conversations. Find the right balance and you will enjoy playing your ranger.

Good reasoning with the orc background. Orcs are still pretty useful in higher levels from what I have seen, and if it´s only to fill the ranks and make it costly for PCs to break away from a fight with a heavy hitter. Hobgoblins would be even better from a non-story perspective, I plan to supplement my heavy hitters with Hobgoblin Leaders as often as possible, especially if it is a monster with only one or few attacks in general or if it is a more soldierish monster like a gorgon or an umber hulk instead of a more berserk type monster like a bulette.

Just pray your DM doesn't chose Princes of the Apocalypse because of the legacy of part wipes it has caused as your first mission. Best way to choose a favored enemy is ask the dm if they could give you a tip on a few of the common enemies then pick the one that fits you characters view.
