umm no I was pretty much just referring to what Kel posted...

I have never had a character anywhere near the top ten, so much of the above doesn’️t really apply to me, but I’️m going to give you my opinion anyway, because this is the internet.

A ranked top ten, whilst a nice idea, was always destined to be at risk of becoming a bit closed-off. A title holder, one or two challengers, and a handful of contenders, would be more fluid and accessible, and is probably the way to go. Ironically this is much closer in spirit to how actual professional wrestling works - the storyline is key, not a scientific metric ranking system.

Ditto with the predetermined matches. I am actually quite fond of these, although most people I’️ve RP’️ed with on this board appear to have a philosophy of ’️just wing it and see what happens’️, which is fair enough. Perhaps a happy medium would be to have both RP-ers (or a mod, for a title match) at least state their expectations of the upcoming match, e.g. “I expect it will go down to the wire,” or “I expect girl B will run riot due to ruthless cheating”, etc.

[quote="Bluemouse":1aymi1va]Not-In-Top-Ten: "TOP TEN IS POPULARITY CONTEST MODS ONLY PICK BLAH BLAH TYPICAL UPPER CARD MENTALITY OMG"

I think that just changes the problem, and doesn't eliminate it. I think the goal is more to develop a useable roster, not to pick favorites. If the WWE or what have you had 4k wrestlers on the books, and CM Punk was no more noticeable than nameless jobber #452, it'd be very difficult for a fan to get into it. Also, it'd be very difficult for any of those wrestlers to gain notoriety with the fans or start a feud, as so small a part of such a large group.

Right now there's a big messy pile of all of your clothes from all seasons and from 15 years ago and that you bought last week. Imagine trying to put together an outfit. I think the aim of the new thing is more to arrange the things you wear regularly so that they're easily accessible and noticeable 'n junk.

Completely agree. I think the underlying problems with all of this are cohesion and community. As opposed to the feeling that you are staring into an abyss of unused and undeveloped characters.

Shameless thread hijack here, but a few months ago I did suggest a way of bringing some order to the chaos, with an ‘official’️ news thread that people could add their favourite finished matches to. This way you could easily see which characters were active and ambitious at the moment (as per Kelsea’️s directory idea), and find the best-written RP’️s of the characters (as per the ‘Showcase’️ idea). But the news feed idea bombed, so maybe it needs work. Or maybe it needs to be made a prerequisite of title contendership (I.e. you can’️t be a contender until you have scored enough showcase appearances in the news thread). That would be an accessible goal for newbies and vets alike. And perhaps slightly easier to moderate.

Another random thought on the issue of ‘title matches affecting everybody’️ - maybe officially declare that the space below the final ‘Girl X wins by Y’️ line, should be open to anyone to post their opinion of the match, as a fan? I doubt it would get used, but still. Community feedback and all that.

Exaaaactly. I think there should be a way to tell who is of consequence to the organization and what their role is. I do miss the one-character-per-person thing from places like chat boards, and the community that came with it. I think here people end up wanting attention and looking for it with the rankings/title thing, whereas some community involvement, IC or OOC, could be just the thing.

I remember your Burn idea. I sort of liked the idea, but I never wanted to post to it because I'm like that. I think the attitudes people take toward characters are a little goofy here, and that contributes, but mostly I just don't want people in my business who don't belong there.

[quote="hamish1024":3ri783vp](as per Kelsea’️s directory idea)

Actually it was Bluemouse's directory idea... the showcase was mine..

Although the idea of keeping the ranking to act as an example for newer players sounds good, a ranking system is just not going to work that way... And if the newer players learn anything, they will do so from the actual showcase matches and RPs, not from a list of names... As long as we properly highlight the showcase matches and RPs, that should be enough to draw the attention of newer players...

A ranking system with mod's choosing who goes up and down might get around the "win to proceed" idea, but that problem will be replaced by a new problem.. Certain members will start complaining about (or feeling hard done by) how mods decided who goes up and down in the rankings, work done reviewing matches would be scowled at and lets just say that's a saga I don't really feel like playing out.

On top of that I feel that there is a number of other niggling issues that effected the old ranking systems (and by extension the new suggested one with mods choosing)... hamish just underlined one of the things I have felt about the old ranking system with its closed nature, that would simply transfer onto this new one. I'm not saying that the ranking was bad, but having felt these issues in the background for some time, I do think its time to move on from it completely

I'll just add...

As the one who came up with the ranking idea, I feel that whatever good they had or have (and I DO think they did some good)

That with the direction we want to move, it's run its course. and time to move on to something different.

So if the "Showcase" matches and RPs are going to be part of the new decisions, whats to stop like, everybody from claiming their stuff is a showcase RP?

Not to mention, if the decision is also going to be based of quality of RP's/matches, how does that work when players have varying degrees of skill?

Example: Players A and B decide to do a match, and make it a showcase, each hoping to get their person noticed for possible title contention. They happen to RP to the best, or at least, a very good amount, of their ability, in what, for them, ends up being a good match.

Only their skill level at rping is pretty much nothing compared to say Players C/D, who don't even bother trying, because even their laziest crap is good.

Or that the person judging said Showcase of players A/B, who put in their best effort, happens to be worlds above their skill level and looks down on their "showcase" and disregards it?

Granted, none of these things may actually happen, but I think the general point is that there's going to be issues of some kind with any system used.

+1 for Tai. If I haven't said if before, I think kel's showcase idea only creates a new variation on the problem.

To clarify, that's +1 for Tai's point, not for Tai himself. He's still a dick.

There's going to be issues and problems no matter how it's done.

The trick is, to find the system with the LEAST issues to worry about.
