Old school RPGs
A lazy man's post...
They don't really make RP games like they use to now-a-days... Are there any fans of old school RPGs? And if so what are your favourites?

A Lazy Bawss's Reply...
I must agree that RPG's just arent the same... Japanese's Ones anyway... But some games from the 7th gen kick ass... Just so few... Anyway lets go old skool >.>
Super Mario RPG, Pokemon Red & Blue, Wild Arms 2, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Ogre Battle 64, Diablo 2, Brave Fencer Musashi, Monster Rancher 2, Monster Rancher Battle Card Game, Digimon World, Paper Mario, FF7, FF8. FF Tactics,
Pretty Much all the stuff I played in my glory days. All my other RPG's arent exactly "Old Skool". But If you're looking for good rpg's you should try Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean: The last Hope, Lost Oddessy, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect 2!
POKEMON BLUE FTW!!!!!! \m/

I have to admit, you got good taste, I chose most of those games as well.
Except for Earthbound which I've never played and Digimon which for some reason I didn't really like.

Oh Digimon World for the ps1 sucks bigtime... It's not very good... It's just a favorite of mine.
But Earthbound is a great game for me... I could make a gigantic list of why its good and why it appeals to me but.... I dont feel like typing THAT MUCH.

Oh rubbish, there's still plenty of awesome RPGs.
It's just that most of them are on handhelds instead of consoles.

Re: Old school RPGs
I was more into Sonic and Streets of Rage more then RPG's, but my old Sega Genesis has one that I really enjoyed called Shining Force, really fun RPG, the "Golden Sun" before Golden Sun. I also have always belived that Final Fantasy 6 or 3 as it was called in America, was the best of the FF series, mainly because the stories of the games have taken a major backseat for graphics since the good, yet overated FF7, plus, EmoRoth failed to destroy one city, Kefka was able to break the world, EmoRoth killed one character in the most overated moment in video game history, yet Kefka caused one main character to attempt suicide in a far more heartbreaking scene. Yeah, I perfer FF6 and the old school games, where the graphics werent HD, but the story was far better and more immersive then alot of current RPGs, barring Mass Effect and a few others mentioned above this post.

There are some, usually they take the form of first person shooters/slashers like Oblivion and Fallout 3 (same makers, Bethesda). But I guess I'm refering more to the Final Fantasy style RPG where you assemble a party mis-fits and can control all in battle, like Mass effect and Knights of the old republic (also same makers, bioware).

And this is where the problem lies.. Maybe hand helds are still good because they are not trying to max out their graphics rating, but seems I don't use hand helds I don't know...
FF6 and FF9 for me were the best ever RPGs of all time... FF Tactics was complex but still very good, Chrono Trigger was also favourites of mine; I enjoyed FF7 but always thought it was overated in comparison to FF6 + 9... FF8 was my least favourite Final Fantasy back then because of weak coincidental storyline and multiple characters that I wanted to power drive through a table all the way to hell... But even now as I look back at FF8 I feel a sense of nostalgia that I will not be getting from any of the FFs since they went into double figures...
There were absolutely loads of these games back then which I promised myself to play, but never got round too and although there were some bad ones out there, the good out weighed the bad... Now-a-days the "assemble your team" RPGs I've played makes my eyes bleed from the overload of sparkly shiny things that are unneccessary... meanwhile they also make my brain decide to voluntarily shut down its own nervous system for story writing and characters that makes FF8 look like Shakespeare.
A message to all the game makers out there... When I am thinking that they'd rather go back and play Chrono CROSS (don't get me started on that one!) rather then your sparkly shiny things, then you know you are doing something wrong

Re: Old school RPGs
I have yet to play FF6... I put it on my list of games to play to tho. I only named FF7, 8 and Tactics because... They are the only ones I played. XD (We own FF4 on the DS tho)
I recall being very sad about RPG games during the 6th generation. I owned a Gamecube and an Xbox, that being said... Once you play all 12 Good Games on the Xbox you're pretty much outta the Great Games... I remember being very RPG hungry and stairing at a wall of various Japanese RPG's that covered the entire wall of the gamestop for PS2 only... V__V Sad times...
I like Fallout 3 and Oblivion... But they feel like Lonely MMO's at times; It's just your character and the various NPC's on the overworld; that's it. The games are amazingly fun for me but I'd like Bethesda's games more if were able to have a real Party System.
I usually like Bioware's games tho. They rarely dissapoint me... Save for the Combat in Mass Effect 1.
I honestly havent owned my own a Handheld since the Gameboy Color. So I honestly cant help but feel a bit saddend about missing out on Good RPG's...
Fallout New Vegas anyone!? XD

Dragon Quest IX, Tales of Vesperia, The World Ends With You, Jeanne D'Arc, Persona 3/4, Mario and Luigi 3, Sands of Destruction, Infinite Space, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Etrian Odessey 1/2/3, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, there's a new Golden Sun coming out...and that's just off the top of my head.
There's been plenty of awesome RPGs out in recent years, you just have to look for them. :)
