Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Well...that PPV was very underwhelming. Nothing of real note happened, though we at least got a couple fun matches out of it.
NOW THEN, for a new segment here on the wrestling page, that will last FOREVER...or until I get bored/forget to do it again, called "The Real Winners and Losers of BackLash" which shall be continued every PPV. Was going to start this at Mania, but forgot too.
"But Tai, doesn't PWI magazine do this every year after Wrestlemania?"
SHUT UP THIS IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. ORIGINAL IDEA. DO NOT STEAL.
The Real Winners and Losers of Backlash 2018
Match 1: Seth Rollins(c) vs The Miz (IC Title Match)
Result: Seth Rollins wins via Pinfall (Curby Curby Stomp Stomp)
The Real Winner: The Miz. I've said this for a while, as have others, and it seems the majority is starting to recognize this, The Miz is great. He's holding his own and having standout matches with the likes of IWC darlings Balor and Rollins and even non indy guys like Reigns. He knows what works for him, what he does best, and how to work with pretty much anyone, and between mastering his character, promos, the crowd, and, over the last couple years, his in ring skills, he could be considered one of the best "Home Grown" WWE Stars.
The Real Loser: Finn Balor. While not as bad off as others tonight, the poor sexy irishman wasn't even on the card tonight, and has taken a few notable losses in recent weeks. Clearly his story with Seth is continuing, but he's currently faring the worst of the three.
Match 2: Nia Jax(c) vs Alexa Bliss: Raw Womens Title Match
Result: Nia Jax wins via Samoan Drop
The Real Winner: Nia Jax. Kudos to WWE, Nia is the first BBW woman I can recall WWE having as a Womens Champion, and while this bullying storyline isn't the best (not helped by Bliss being super tiny and Nia's less than great promos), its gotten Nia actually over and she has been able to try and inspire children/little girls the world over. Not everything is for "us" (the grown adult neckbeard crowd) after all.
The Real Losers: Bayley and Sasha Banks: Bad booking for both, terrible promos from both, and in recent times, godawful in ring performance from Bayley (who was clearly NEVER ready to leave NXT), has pushed these two women so far out of the title picture that Bayley is all but a jobber and Sasha is an afterthought.
Match 3: Jeff Hardy(c) vs Randy Orton (US Title Match)
Result: Jeff Hardy wins via Swanton Bomb
The Real Winner: The US Title itself. Ever since John Cena's reign in 2015, (and some would argue Rusevs and Sheamus's 2014 reigns, and possibly even since Dean Ambroses 2013-2014 reign) the US Title has had a resurgence in popularity and importance, being held by big name stars and competed over in great matches, a far cry from the years when it was just "That belt that Miz/Ziggler/Kofi/Swagger keep trading between each other"
The Real Loser: The European Title. Nobody cared about you. Nobody remembers you.
Match 4: Daniel Bryan vs Big Cass
Result: Daniel Bryan wins via Yes Lock
The Real Winner: Daniel Bryan AND Big Cass. Both men are back from serious injuries, and as long as they can stay healthy, both are set to become among Smackdown Lives biggest stars...and you can't. teach. that.
The Real Loser: Enzo. Worthless little shit is hated by hardcore and casual fans, and is all but blackballed from wrestling, meaning he will either focus on making a super shitty rap album, or in prison. Fuck him.
Match 5: Carmella(c) vs Charlotte Flair (SD Womens Champion)
Result: Carmella wins via...kick to the shin.
The Real Winner: Asuka. If Asuka had WON at Mania, lost the title to Carmella, and then lost this rematch tonight, that would have killed her aura dead forever. By losing at Mania, she was potentially spared an even worse fate, and can still be built as a threat.
The Real Loser: Becky Lynch. First ever Smackdown Womens Champion...and is such an afterthought, that I can't remember the last time she was even in a PPV title or singles match.
Match 6: AJ Styles(c) vs Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Championship Match)
Result: Both men are counted out via kicks to the dick
The Real Winner: Nakamura. Dude hit some dull spots early on in his main roster run, but his heel turn seems to have given him some new fire, and he's been more entertaining in and out of the ring in the last month than he was his entire run before this on SD.
The Real Loser: Dicks. Dicks everywhere.
Match 7: Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashely vs Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
Result: Braun and Bobby via Stalling Suplex.
The Real Winner: ...Nobody. This match was utterly pointless.
The Real Loser: Bobby Lashley. Dudes been back a few weeks now...why should I give a shit about him again?
Match 8: Samoa Joe vs Roman Reigns
Result: Reigns wins via Spear
The Real Winner: Brock Lesnar. With the reveal of his recent contract negotiations, allowing him to work in WWE and do a UFC fight like he wants, Brock Lesnar has proven that he is, by far, the smartest mother fucker in pro wrestling.
The Real Loser: Roman Reigns. I actually feel bad for the guy. He's clearly trying, but from the backstage reports, he's completely micromanaged, unable to make any of his own changes or decisions, and this experiment of making him the top guy is clearly failing big time. Fans completely refuse to cut him any slack, for reasons that are justified, and other reasons that aren't, and because of that, and Vince and Co.'s refusal to either pull the trigger and let him have his run, reaction be damned, or to end the damn experiment already, is fucking with Romans career, and, based of his recent performances, clearly screwing with Romans confidence and ability.
He's basically being told by the fans "We hate you and want you to retire/quit/die/get fired" and being told by the company "hey, your not good enough yet, or ready yet, for this role we are grooming you for, so we are going to keep holding off...BUT, you're not allowed to change anything about yourself at all, and if you do, we will force you to revert back."
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Roman just says fuck it and decides to quit or retire, and the sad thing is, he doesn't really deserve this. He's a good worker, a good talent, had some great matches, but between the fans refusing to accept anyone who isn't an indy/Japan darling (minus Cartoon Character Strowman), refusing to accept him because Vince likes him, and getting pushed before he should have, he will never be the kind of success he COULD have been.
Wow that took forever. Lets see if I remember to do this next PPV.

What a terrible fucking PPV.
In what reality does anyone think having CARMELLA defeat Charlotte fuckin' Flair clean is a good idea?

@Tai:
"who was clearly NEVER ready to leave NXT"
Except when, you know, she left NXT? Bayley was a victim of bad booking, sadly. Had she been booked as a solid underdog wrestler, it could've worked. Instead we went for the "Wrestling fan turned wrestler" gimmick :/
As per Asuka being the winner...disagreed big time. Asuka's streak was broken by someone who was easily beaten by someone who could win the title via MitB AND an assist on top of that :/
But yeah. This PPV is pretty much the reason why I just stick to NXT nowadays :/

How does bad booking make up for her shitty promos, looking lost and awkward in big crowds, consistently botching in matches over and over for months? Most of those issues, btw, existed before the feud with Alexa Bliss completely ruined her character, and many of her promo issues existed while she was in NXT.
But the issues of NXT stars being completely sheltered by the NXT and the Full Sail Crowd and being horribly unprepared for the main roster is a discussion for another time.
