Wrestling Information
Strategy: Move fast, hit hard, using a mix of kickboxing and luchadore technique, along with dirty tactics when need. Whatever it takes.
Style: Hard-Hitting Luchador
Type: High-Flyer
Preferred Matches: Anything and everything is good, though he sometimes gets in the mood for hardcore matches and more intimate affairs.
Physical Statistics
Endurance:★★★ - As high-flyers go, he's fairly durable.
Strength:★★★ - The same can be said of his strength.
Speed:★★★★★ - Where Mateo shines. Despite being tall for a high flyer, he can move with the best of them.
Defense:★★ - His weakest point. He doesn’t do so well when he has to take someone’s hits head on and he can’t stay ahead of them.
Technique:★★★ - Skilled in high-flying luchador moves and kickboxing, with a lacking ground game.
Wrestling Statistics
Strikes: ★★★★ - Has incorporated a lot of fast, hard knee and elbow strikes into the usual luchador routine.
Submissions: ★★ - Has a few rudimentary ones to play with. Nothing complex.
Powerhouse: ★★★ - It’s not his go-to, but he's strong enough to pull off some good stuff.
Aerial: ★★★★★ - To hear Mateo tell it, he's the greatest high flyer ever born. Not wholly true, but...
Counters: ★★★ - Can counter power moves and strikes with ease. Submissions, less so.
Signature Move:
- Lawn Dart:
One of the few power moves Mateo uses with any real regularity. He lifts his opponent up on his shoulder with their head facing forward, runs towards the corner, then throws them off so their head hits the middle turnbuckle.
- La Bomba:
The standing Spanish Fly. With one arm over his opponent’s chest while he faces them, Mateo does a backflip and carries them with him, slamming them down right on their back.
Finishing Moves:
- Cyclone Kill:
A simple, but powerful move. Mateo spins about to build momentum, then lashes out with a Big Boot at the end of the turn, hitting his opponent right in the face. He can execute this quite quickly, and sometimes bounces off the ropes for even more power.
- Death Star:
A more brutal variation on the traditional shooting star press. Instead of coming down on his opponent with his stomach, he lands on them with his knees, which is both safer for Mateo and more dangerous for his opponent.
Personality:
It's hard to believe that, once upon a time, Mateo was actually an optimistic, pleasant boy. Any trace of that child is long gone, and in his place is a violent dangerous man. Mateo’s main concerns these days are making himself look good and enjoying himself in the ring, playing off to the crowd at his opponent’s expense. He’s fully embraced a darker lifestyle, taking what he can, when he wants, whatever way he can get it, and he's not afraid to run over anyone in his way.
Focused, driven, ruthless, he’s a dangerous man when he sees something he wants.
History:
Mateo was born in Arlen, the son of a gas station cashier and a bus driver. It was a midling life, average, with not much to his name...at first glance. But for excitement, Mateo didn’t look to the humble generation he found himself in. He was more interested in the life of his grandfather, Enrique Pedroso - or, as he was known on the Mexican wrestling circuit, Blanco
Ángel. The White Angel.
A fairly popular wrestler in the 60s and 70s, Blanco had wanted his son - Mateo’s father - to pick up the mantle, but he was never much interested in the sport, and he died without seeing his dream fulfilled.
Mateo was different. While his grandfather died shortly after he was born and he never met the man directly, he watched all of the old tapes and grew up idolizing his exploits. He grew up with dreams of going down to Mexico and taking up the mantle, and he trained hard for it for a solid decade. When he turned twenty, he packed up, made his way across the border, and started what he thought was his destiny. It did not go as planned.
Mateo was talented, skilled, and hard-working, with a great pedigree, but none of that seemed to ingratiate him. He was viewed as outsider, both by the crowd and his fellow wrestlers, and was put in poor matches, rarely televised. He won often, had a great record, but he was often denied things like title shots. He expected some dues would have to be paid, but it seemed like they were going above and beyond to keep him down.
After five years of constant abuse, he’d became disillusioned with the whole sport, and was coming to hate it more and more. Angered, he decided to start taking matters into his own hands, and took the mantle of El Negro Diablo, his grandfather’s greatest nemesis. With a new mask and a new purpose, he began resorting to dirtier tactics in the ring, messing with other wrestler’s masks to distract them, crotch shots when the referee wasn’t looking. He also incorporated more strikes into his style, mixing in some MMA with the typical luchadore flair.
It didn’t gain him any fans, but being good didn’t do that, either, so why take the harder road when the result was the same?
Eventually, though, management grew tired of his tactics, and he was shamed out of the community. He had gained the notice of the AFW during this time, however, and was invited to come overseas and try his hand on the Japanese scene...
