Re: Amy and King- The Hunt
Amy saw King stand and turn toward the sound of groaning metal as the tower fell, just in time for him to see it crash down on top of him. Tools showered down all around in a hail of steel, but she didn't have the time to admire the spectacle. Yes, he was down, but she needed to make sure that he was out, too; she didn’t have the energy to be looking over her shoulder as she limped all the way back to the Tension medical center.
So even as King groaned from underneath the mess of metal, Amy scrambled to find a suitable weapon to finish the job. Luckily, there was now a wealth of options to choose from. Sledge hammer? She’d need two hands for that. Pipe? That’s PVC; she needed lethal, not kinky. Wrench?
Wrench could work.
Amy grabbed a pipe wrench from the floor- heavy, metal, nice- and ran to where she’d seen King last. Her injured wrist throbbed. Gripping things was not pleasant; it was damn near impossible. Holding onto that scaffolding leg was pure torture, and all she had done was wrap her fingers around it and push. She was lucky that it wasn’t her dominant hand that he’d attacked.
When she found King, though, she hesitated. It was hard to tell with that mask on, but he looked to be knocked out. Of course, Amy had to make sure: “Hey, buddy, I’m gonna go ahead and take your mask home with me, ‘kay? I need a new dishrag.”
...Nothing. He was out.
Amy dropped her weapon back in the dirt, relieved. Even with the pepper spray, she wasn’t blind to how lucky she’d been tonight. The dropkick pushed him to just the right position, the scaffolding was only just tall enough. She wasn’t sure, but, based on where it lay now, the toolbox might even have played a role in putting King down. A slight adjustment in any number of variables could have been disastrous for Amy; she could easily have gotten destroyed tonight. And she really only had herself to blame. She’d pushed King to that point- it hadn’t taken a lot of pushing, true, but the fact was that Amy had asked for this, and King had come very close to delivering.
Amy expelled a long sigh from her lungs. She had an uncomfortable phone call to make. But first, hospital.
She started to walk away from King, but something made her pause. Amy didn’t know the long term effects of pepper spray, but collecting it in a mask, then breathing through that mask while unconscious seemed like a recipe for disaster. Amy rolled her eyes. She couldn’t believe what she was about to do.
She clambered over the debris until she could reach King’s face. Gently, she rolled it up until his nose and mouth were exposed to the open air. It was a merciful gesture, one that she doubted King would appreciate.
Was she tempted to unmask King? Not particularly. But she did want to leave him a message. Something that said, I could have taken your mask, but I didn’t. After a moment, she reached into her pocket. She pulled out her 500 yen coin and stuck it right on his chin. Perfect. That’ll pay for his shitty phone.
She restarted her exit from the construction site, pausing only to pick up her backpack from where she’d dropped it. When she made it outside, she realized that the adrenaline was wearing off, and she was hit with just how tired she was. Could she make it all the way back to the Tension campus without collapsing? Maybe she should find a cab, instead. She’d call an ambulance, but… If only her stupid phone hadn’t died. If only his stupid phone hadn’t broken. Stupid. Amy shouldered her backpack and started her long walk back. She was probably going to have to stand Nathan up tomorrow.
