The rule is they keep going until it flops. Generally. Some quit while they're ahead, and some keep going long after it's time to stop.

Pirates 2 was fun, and Blue even if that's true. Sometimes a different director takes the rights and makes a movie in an existing movie series. Like for instance, James Cameron was the director of the 1st and 2nd Terminator movies and he intended for T-2 to be the finale of the series, but then a different director made T-3 which basically makes no sense since T-2 had a VERY tight knot on the ending that would prevent a third movie from being made unless it was a prequel that took place in the future like Terminator Salvation somewhat was.

From what I hear, Reloaded and Revolutions are what killed the franchise 'quieter' than the Star Wars we see now Wammy :[

I will NEVER understand why people hate the prequel trilogy of Star Wars and the Clone Wars TV show, I never even knew people hated them until a few months ago.

They were made to explain what happened BEFORE the rise of the Galactic Empire, how it came into power, how Anakin became Darth Vader, how the Jedi were wiped out, and how the Clone Wars began and eventually ended with the TV show showing what happened during the war since we only saw the beginning and the end of the Clone Wars during episodes II and III.

But everyone has been an ungrateful criticizing git about it.
