My position with Tension has always been that I find it difficult to write believable characters in an environment that just isn't believable. Having 300 pound giant men fighting 90lb 16 year old girls makes no sense. Why would the girls keep signing up? How would it be able to legally go on so long like that? Why hasn't there been any kind of reaction against the 300 pound guys who kill little girls?

It goes on from there, but when I think about a character's motivations and aspirations, I can't make Tension work with the way it currently is. For me, in a nutshell, Killer King is the reason I don't see any opportunity to rp in Tension.

I DO like the idea of mixed matches. A lot, actually. But the setting as a whole has to sort of fall in line with itself, and right now it just seems disjointed, which is only natural given that a lot of different people are writing it without a strong, centralized directive, and of course I understand that the way I approach things here on this site is certainly not the standard, and I don't expect everyone to see things my way.

It adds up to Tension just not being a place where I think my efforts would really be rewarded, so I stick to Friction.

I get a lot of what you're saying and agree. I'm not saying Tension is perfect, but I think its problems are addressable and worth the effort, and I really want to give it a try.

Right, if someone wants to spearhead a new Tension movement and carve out a niche where you can rp, that's great, I'm just saying I'm not the mouse for the job.

If Tension was streamlined to have even more realistic match-ups in terms of skill and not be about one sided thwompings, would that win you over? Maybe with having subdivisions of Tension that match people according to weight class.

One of my biggest pet peeves in this forum is people asking to have Tension matches with my Friction characters.

More or less, but I don't think weight classes would be the way to go. The size mismatch I think is part of the appeal, but within reason. You watch a fight to see if maybe the smaller fighter can pull off the win, but you aren't exactly on the edge of your seat while some tiny girl who never had a chance gets murdered by a huge dude. There's no drama.

So it makes the matches dull and uninteresting, and in the rp setting largely pointless, and most importantly, it makes playing a believable character very difficult for me. Most characters I've seen in Tension don't really have title aspirations, and the ones I've seen that have more competitive matches are there because it's fun to have hard matches. If you had kind of an above average-sized female character who wanted to prove that she was the best and someday wanted the title, how would she look at the long list of monsters five times her size and think "I got this". It's very hard for me to have the character justify to herself all the hard work and sacrifice it takes to do the job. I guess it works in a fantasy, anime-type setting, but that's not where I personally write things.

It bears mentioning that I'm not into most of the stuff other people are here. I didn't grow up with video games and anime and comic books and stuff, so of course my perspective will be different. I don't think I'm the only person who likes to keep things more realistic, and I think the people who really want to build storylines tend to be more realistic-types. Sometimes.

I don't specifically mean to be all tl;dr, I just have nothing else to do at the moment. I guess the gist of it for me is that I prefer character over spectacle. I don't really get off on one-off, instant gratification sorts of things. It takes a lot longer to warm me up. <img src=
