The reason he's a boxer is because I once read about a movie which took place in China while it was under the partial control of the British. The protagonists martial artist friend was killed by a British man in a fighting bout, and the movie was about him getting revenge.

The British man, named Typhoon I think, didn't use any fancy moves or anything - he just boxed very well, fast and hard and simple. The idea of a fighting style like that, simple and efficient against complex and... somewhat less efficient? Anyway, it struck a chord with me.
