Re: Pokemon Thread
Gotta back Alex on this.
Love type is stupid anyway and literally would not work with any pokemon, other then possibly this ONE. Plus you'd have to create a whole second new type just to counter it.
Too much work.

Re: Pokemon Thread
I can't really argue with you on this Alex, but I can present an alternative supporting bug, though admittedly not fitting the wheel of Eeveelutions
As I already indicated Sylv (not Sylph) can possibly be short for Sylvania, a word that commonly means "forrest" or "woods". Bug-types are commonly found in most of the forrest/wooded areas of the games, which would seem to support (although loosely) the idea.
Sylveon has unusually round eyes. Often, people associate bugs with having much more round if not bulbous eyes. Just an observation
Those could very easily be bows on his/her neck and ear. However, they do have the appearance of butterflies, at least that's what the inkblot says to me. o.o
His/her ribbons do flow a bit and are rather unusual. It could easily be a way to indicate cardinal directions like windvanes, which would support the flying idea. However, in a bug theory, these could represent antennae on the head with the neck ribbons representing the front legs.
His/her light body could just be an indication of how bug-types are significantly lighter than most other types.
I'm not sure who of you have seen the CoroCoro scans, but if you look at the one with Sylveon and the other Eeveelutions, something that stands out to me is the presence of fangs only visible in Sylveon's mouth, but no other Eeveelutions. It could easily just be it's proximity to the artwork though.
I'm not fully sold on the moves shown supporting any sort of typing though, because they were fairly vague moves with only Swift being identifiable.
Another thing that strikes me as peculiar for the possibility of a flying type is the colorful ends to the ribbons, not to mention the rest of the body. I can't say why, but it just seems to not be fitting of a flying-type (or a bug-type for that matter).
I also don't really buy into the whole wheel of opposites theory to be perfectly honest. There have always been an odd number of Eeveelutions. Just because they have only revealed one new Eeveelution does not mean that it's Generational opposite will not exist.
Lastly, I leave you with this to ponder:
Scouring deviantart, I came across a new theory. Sylveon is a FEMALE Eeveelution of the Normal type and a MALE Normal type Eeveelution is yet to be revealed. What possible method for evolution they could do is beyond my guesses. Possibly some sort of hold item/accessory (Like a bow for Sylveon and a baseball cap for it's opposite, as stupid as that sounds)?
Edit: Something that could support the Female/Male notion. It's Pokemon X and Y, correct? Genetics anybody?

Re: Pokemon Thread
See, my thing is, I think if they wanted it to be Bug, they'd be a bit more obvious with it. Buggy wings, a green coloring perhaps, eyes that are blatantly more buggy than these. I'm not saying it's not a Bug type, that's my third guess after Flying and Normal, but it just doesn't jump out to me as a Bug.
And, well...Bugs have been my favorite type since Gen I. Sylveon here isn't giving me any major Bug vibes at all. I'm just not feeling it, y'know?
My biggest problem is...well, it's too showy for an Eeveelution. It feels way too over-designed, whereas all the other Eevee forms tend to have simpler looks to them. It's just not sitting right with me...

I couldn't agree with you more. Though using the same logic on the being a bit more obvious, wouldn't wings be the first sign that it was a Flying-type?
And yes, it is much too showy. It honestly feels to me like it was something they thought of bringing in with Gen III to kind of promote the Contests idea (really cutesy pokemon here!! looky!!) and scrapped it for later use. The more I read though, the more my gut really starts pulling to Normal with emphasis on gender.
One thing though about the "Nymph" prefix for the flying argument. Nymphs vary in elemental affinity as being associated with earth (Wood Nymphs) as well as water (Water Nymphs). I also don't know a lick of Japanese or German to take a guess at the link with all of the prefixes.
Granted, looking at the English name again. Sylvania has it's prefix that it seems to share with Sylveon (Syl- not Sylv- as I was disappointed to learn). It signifies together (makes sense: forest=trees together). So possibly another hint at Genetics? Maybe they introduce love to the game, but not as a type, rather a mechanic. PokÃmon develop an affinity towards their trainers already, but why not generate an affinity to one another? Theory: [strikethrough]Female Eevee[/strikethrough] walks into a bar...erm...Female Eevee and Male Eevee battle alongside each other in double battles/baton pass to each other/have some sort of symbiotic relationship or something (however Gamefreak wants to pull it off), at a certain point or possibly after breeding together, a leveling-up equates to respective Sylveon and Male-eon evolutions.
It's a terribly flawed theory, but it was a lot easier to type up than this dumbass lab report is turning out to be.
Edit: One other thought about the Gender-based theory. Since each gen has had an Eeveelution with some form of type-advantage over its fellow gen Eeveelution(s), if the "Female" Sylveon is either Normal or Flying (both put emphasis on stereotype feminine qualities like lightness, elegance, and grace in Sylveon's case), then we have a case for the male having to be Fighting or Rock (both put emphasis on stereotype masculine qualities toughness and power). WIth no counterpart revealed, we have no reason to have a basis for either. Interestingly, any of the Normal or Flying/Fighting combos yields Jolteon being the lone wolf/cat/fox without an inner-Eeveelution that counters it.
