Re: Internet Interview?
Second part of the highly polemic and much anticipated interview with the cooking cat.
Natalia Miss Cooking Cat, you are considered one of the world's greatest chefs, and now you are opening a new restaurant in Paris, one of the world's most important cities from the culinary perspective. The dishes in your menu sound a little commonplace, though: the essential nature of pizza... with an insanely long list of ingredients. Why did you choose these subjects?
Cooking Cat: Miauw miauw miou miu purrr
NAT Should the cultured person be understood as a custodian looking to impose order on places where chaos prevails? I mean... why such a large list of ingredients?
CC: Miauw miauw mewo mew mew mew mew
NAT Grandmothers also make pizzas, why does it matter if your list of ingredients is longer?
CC: Miew miau miau miaow mow mew mew mew
NAT But, in doing so, don't we stray from pizza?
CC: Moew meow mew mew mew mew miauw miauw miauw
NAT But why list all of those ingredients if you know the average person would never want them in a pizza?
CC: Miauw miauw miauw mew mew mew meow
NAT Why do we waste so much time trying to complete things that can't be realistically completed?
CC: Mew mew meow meow miauw miauw maiwu MIAULW!
NAT But pizzas are circular, they have borders, or limits, and they can't depict more than they happen to depict.
CC:Miaw miauw miauw miauw mew purrrrrrrrr
NAT Why are these lists and accumulations of ingredients so particularly important to you?
CC: Purrr meow meow meow meow miauw miauw hissssss
NAT Still, you are famous for being able to explain your passions...
CC:....
NAT A definition would certainly be possible with a more conventional animal.
CC: HISSSSSSSSS!
NAT It would seem that you are saying that we should stop defining things and that progress would, instead, mean only counting and listing things. Like the ingredients of a pizza.
CC: Miauw miauw miauw miauw mew mew mew mew
NAT But you also said that lists can establish order. So, do both order and anarchy apply? That would make the Internet, and the list that the search engine Google creates, perfect for you.
CC: MEEEEEOOOOOOW!
NAT Are you saying that teachers should instruct students on the difference between good and bad based on the ingredients of a pizza? If so, how should they do that?
CC: MEW mew Miauw miauw mew mew meor..RAWR!
NAT You yourself are more likely to work with ovens, and you have a spice rack of 30,000 different spices. It probably doesn't work without a list or catalogue.
CC: Mew mew meow meow miauw miauw miw
NAT Yes, I get that... but you include a nice list by the French philosopher Roland Barthes in your list of pizza ingredients. He lists the things he loves and the things he doesn't love. He loves salad, cinnamon, cheese and spices. He doesn't love bikers, women in long pants, geraniums, strawberries and the harpsichord. How does that make sense?
CC: Mew mew meew meow meow meow miaw PURRRRRRRR!
Nat: Well that was...illuminating. Thank you for your time Miss Cooking Cat.
