Is it just me?
The Mr. Cross guy thread made me think about this, which, while that opening will probally anger somebody, I think the resulting thought could be important. I mean, maybe that guy really was trolling, or maybe he had no freaking idea how to talk on a forum with that kind of heavy handed subject. But the fact is that the guy brought forth a rather serious issue from the real world that could have resulted in a good discussion or debate, yet was totally slaughtered right off the bat. Now yes, his chosen topic was by and far too big of one to bring to this group, and his way of putting it was really really really the wrong way to go, but like I said, it made me decide to bring up one thing of merit.
This is probally going to be one of the dumbest questions Ive ever asked, because I already know the answer....
...
Is anybody here actually interested in doing a serious open discussion on something?
Anything?
You know, as in one relating to events or topics or even sports or anything real world that somehow, through an act of God himself, should he or she exist, doesnt get derailed by pokemon or any of the several reasons why just about every single other thread in Discussion has turned into nothing but some of the most pointlessy random bullshit on the internet?
I mean seriously, we could do a thread which is nothing but:
Person 1: "BACONLEMONADEKETCHUPVAGINA!"
Person 2: "FISHTACOWACOCANADABLOWJOBS!"
Kitten: Kitty picture, something about Bluemouse
Bluemouse: Making fun of whatever topic is, something about Kitten.
Person 3: "Can we try to keep this focused? *seconds later* CABOWABOVANHALENTEABAG"
Person 4: "POKEMONPOKEMONPOKEMONPOKEMONPOKEMONPOKEMON"
Newb: "Hi Im new! *Long list of stupid crap that gets new person in trouble*
And it would be the same to most threads here.
I mean,Im friends with a lot of people here, alot of the folks here, I know to be smart people with logic and opinions that I would like to ask advice of on certain subjects, or even just get their opinions on things that are going on in the world. So the question I suppose is, Do you guys think its actually possible to have a serious open discussion? Or are we simply not interested in it? Does it not fit with the reason people come here? Or are we just having too much fun making it impossible to take anything said here seriously?

Re: Is it just me?
I am very interested to SERIOUSLY discuss role-playing and erotic wrestling, but I refrain from doing it because:
A) I am overloaded with threads
B) My last half serious thread was turned up into a lame dungeons and dragons nerdator thread
C) Kitten pictures are awesome
But yes. Maybe we should have some serious threads. Place a warning sign on the thread start and ask the mods to delete all off-topic comments.
As for bashing noobs, this is necesary to cull the weak.

I'm not liking the look of where that's leading ¬.¬ .. Thing about going off topic is:
1. Contrary to popular belief, our community did not invent it
2. The reason discussions go off topic is not because people are not interested in seriously discussing the topic subject, but because one sarcastic or *slightly* off topic comment is made and then snowballs.
I think many people would like serious discussions, the problem is policing it.
Mr Cross, that you mentioned, is a bad example because: If when you start a thread you think the most likely outcome is a flame war, yet you still post it... Then you've got problems. So lets just forget him in the context of this thread

But what you do when someone starts a serious thread trying to have a mature discussion of the topics and it gets de-railed?

Re: Is it just me?
Do what I do. If you want to have a serious discussion, don't have it on a public forum filled with random internet people. No offense. IM works just fine, and you could even do group chats via IM. Those are hard, in my experience, in that it's difficult to find more than one person willing to give it their attention.
General Discussion on a message board is no place for a serious discussion.

You...don't let it get derailed. If you make a serious thread, then I come in trying to derail, you ignore my post and keep going with the discussion.

Previously in discussion we have successfully discussed the following topics without excessive derailment: video games, rpgs, how terrible the programmers of informe are at their job, wrestling, web comics, touhou, anime and manga
Now, if you were talking about 'serious topics' like, "Do you think that oil speculation is having a serious effect on the price of gas? And if so, what should the (US) government do about it, if anything?"
I am interested in discussing those kinds of topics. And I do discuss those topics.
And the place that I discuss those topics is not the general discussion section of a wrestling fetish board.
Edit:

B) My last half serious thread was turned up into a lame dungeons and dragons nerdator thread
Please note that this was almost solely Souiku's fault.
You should post more threads like that.

NEWS FLASH: the Archergurl who you speaking of is not part of AFW anymore and she's currently working in production for new game titles in Japan. I'm her Canadian friend who she gave her PC due to mines has crashed. She was nice enough to give it to me to help a friend in need. So she got a spared one that she uses for the things I've mention above. BTW, Anegge and Alexandra be sure to check the E-mail adresses carefully. As Archergurl and me aren't the same thing.
