Posting Stories
Inspired by the_observerâ€s post on writing up matches (but not wanting to hijack that thread), I was wondering: would there be any interest as posting matches as short stories, rather than doing them turn-by-turn?
Obviously this wouldnâ€t be to everyoneâ€s taste, and it would change the RP dynamic quite a bit; theyâ€d essentially be collaborative short stories. Youâ€d no longer be controlling your character ‘directlyâ€, as youâ€d have to let the other player write their actions too, so I guess youâ€d be more like their agent, with more general control over what their matches would be like.
Thereâ€s a number of forms that this could take – matches could be sketched out beforehand, written up by one player then passed to the other for approval / fleshing out their own characterâ€s responses before posting. Alternatively, it could still be turn-based, with players alternately writing the beginning / middle / end of the story, resulting in longer, fewer posts (say a maximum of 7 or something). Am open to suggestions obviously.
I appreciate that this would take effort to work properly, but I can see some advantages – matches would be a lot more accessible and easier for others to read. It would hopefully improve the ‘soap opera†elements of wrestling, too – matches would have stronger narratives, and it would be easier to introduce concepts like interference, 2 v 1 beatdowns, special referees etc, which can be difficult to do through post-by-post roleplay. This is especially true of scenarios where one wrestler is helpless for a prolonged section of the fight due to a handicap or just a build up of momentum (you could have lots of chain moves without it being bad etiquette).
So... any takers? Ideas for what this would need to make it good? Or a 3,000-word essay on why longer posts wonâ€t work? I know there are skilled writers out there...

Re: Posting Stories
i've basically done that with Tai, except those were paid comissions... and i eventually got stuck on the last one and had to drop it temporarily. i DID always assume that with the number of girls i had that they'd have to have faced eachother at some point, and have considered mini stories on that. i also have a few old fighting stories laying around, and know a few others here do too, though they're posted around the web as it is anyway

Re: Posting Stories
While I would agree that it is a very interesting idea, I dont really see it working out to well, for one it would require lots of planning beforehand that alot of people dont like, plus it would be rather hard to convert well. A better idea would be either to have people write short stories of say, their characters facing each other, or pay someone to write a match in story terms, Like me and Luffy did. Just hope whoever you pay is as cheap a merc as Luffy is.

Re: Posting Stories
Doing more complicated things, like matches with more than 2 active people, is a lot easier in an IM/irc situation.
Aside from that, it could be a fun idea, but I personally wouldn't bother. I think it'd lose too much of what I like about working with other people. A good writer could certainly do it, borrowing character(s) or not, assuming the borrowed characters were written correctly. I say if you want to try it, go for it and post it here.

Re: Posting Stories
What? It's possible to actually be paid for writing? I refuse to believe that...
Thanks for feedback anyway. I think part of my thinking on this was that a couple of times I've started to write stories but then lost interest towards the end; I thought if they were more collaborative affairs you would have more 'moral support' for a) getting over any writer's block and b) having the incentive to finish. But I also appreciate it could end up like herding cats...
Writing stories between your own characters is a good suggestion for a start point though, I might eventually give it a go.

Ya. Between your own characters they're called "backstory". " title="Razz" /> Go for it.

Re: Posting Stories
Too many issues for me at least since I would need for thiking to be do e on the fly and in the heat of the moment rather than pre-planned. If it was pre-planned or needed to be approved at every step then it would lose it's luster for me since I would know how things would turn out or have to ruin my spoilers that I have in store. However though, I wouldn't blame someone for doing it for money since money is money~

Re: Posting Stories
i've been paid 45 buck for a 10 page story before, so yea you can get paid. especially if you're not disgusted with the things people may ask for. it makes them more desperate. let's say that i had to write a sadomasochist threesome for that one based on pokemon, and i'm not exactly talking about Ash and Misty as the participants...
and me and Tats have been working on our long-term project for a good year or two now, and damned if it would have gotten anywhere without him pitching in/talking it out with me
