face/heel/tweener, more like shades of grey
I've seen it here, in other fed games, real leagues, etc, we all know there's face and heel and what is suppose to make a wrestler one or the other, but personally I believe those terms have lost their meaning from back in the day.
Ex: typical face wrestler, respects the opponents and fans, obeys the rules 99% of the time (the other 1% when giving a taste of one's medicine) ala Bret Hart (for most of his career), Rocky Maivia, Bryan Danielson, etc. Home towns can also factor in, as well as the promotion itself.
Remember NWA-TNA's Heel Section when they ran in Nashville? Where guys like Raven always got the pop even if they set Jesus on fire.
ex: typical heel, breaks the rules, doesn't care about the fans, spits in the face of authority ala Vader, Mankind *debut*, Hunter Hearst Helmsley *blue blood.
Now the heelish wrestlers are becoming crowd favourites no matter what they do (ala Steve Austin), and some faces as well.
Documentaries like Wrestling With Shadows (to name one) most fans don't go by that anymore, they cheer and boo whoever they want. Take John Cena, sure he still has a ton of fans that will never turn on him, but, as even he has admitted, a lot of fans want to see him suffer. Back when Hardcore Holly was 'heel' not once did I boo the guy.
Tonight at an event I attended the event promoter said the money that was collected for a charity the event was for he's going to keep instead. 60/40 crowd reaction in favour of that. Out come Robbie McAllister and is like wait a minute that ain't right, 40/60 agreed with that ( I want to say 50/50 but I think the extra 10% was the promoter's butt buddies lol ).
As for the other wrestlers on the card, it was obvious which reaction they are going for, but some fans can't be bought and have their favourites unless they knockout their own mother.
One example I personally like is Chuck Taylor, he's even told fans "Don't fucking cheer me!" and they do anyway ( of course it's Chuck Taylor, bad example but still). I want to throw in some throat stuffing examples but I think you get the point.
I've looked through a number of profiles and see various face, heel, tweeners, etc, can we really call them that? (just an example here) the heel faction, yeah some of them I could see them getting the jeers while others I'm like nah I can't see them being considered heel by the majority of the population, and some face and tweeners same thing. At the end of the day it's up to the fans to decide, but can there be clear cut face and heels these days, it's there but a bit complected, or is that concept as dead as the dodo? I say the spirit of the face and heel is still there but it's not what it used to be, no matter how good the wrestle is in the ring and their character is times have changed.

Re: face/heel/tweener, more like shades of grey
I explained the definition of Heel, Face and Tweener in a pretty succint way once.
If you're cheered, you're a face. if you're booed you're a heel. If you get cheered for doing things most people would get booed for, you're a tweener. Pretty simple really.
has to be a majority btw. I myself mostly root for heels but that's how I am. I think you can't have good faces without good heels.

i disagree with all of this! morality and philosophy can all be summed up very neatly in 9 easy to remember categories
really don't believe it's accurate, though. there's always infinite maybes with people.
also, this one just cuz i love it

[quote="Maxykun":1v1ru6jj]can we really call them that?
Yup. Absolutely. There's some wiggle room where people might call certain people differently, but certainly having spent enough time with any given character you'd be able to tell generally where they stand. I do think that we're done with the black and white, larger than life style of archetypal 80's characters. Still, within the nebulous gray mess of fallibility and humanity, there is something that allows us to identify people however vaguely with the terms, whatever that something is.
For example, of the three which would you say my Taylor is?

nice one. usually like alignment charts, though if done within a specific show usually one lands outrageously out of place with an out of context quote and much argument ensues

Re: face/heel/tweener, more like shades of grey
I would call your Taylor an unreliable psycho but that's just me.
People are cheering heels these days because I think we've got more and more folks who know it's staged, who don't suspend their disbelief, and who just watch it for the fun.
Also, ALIGNMENT ARGUMENTS huh? Well, here WE GO.
