Cutlass Wrestling [Former Members]
Cutlass was a small British wrestling federation with a cult following founded on the fantastical. Filled to the brim with outlandish character concepts and gimmicks that leaned hard onto kayfabe and audience buy in but played straight. Ninja, pirates, knights, you name it, there was probably someone playing it. The company filed for bankruptcy prior to a slew of lawsuits being filed for worker protections and embezzlement claims collapsed the brand completely. This left many of its talents scattered to the winds, some of which have landed in AFW.
- Author Note:
- If you have any questions about Cutlass or are considering wanting to have one of your characters have come from it, feel free to shoot me a message to chat with me about it. I'd love the chance for additional world building and making some preexisting relationships with my characters. Any character that winds up being from this company is free to add their characters to this listing.
Poster child of Cutlass, widely believed to have a hand in not only its name but it's popularity as well. Fans loved her, opponents hated her, and exact and every one of her matches was an event even if many ended in one sided squashes. Scarlet was the reigning Heavyweight Champion of the brand up until its eventual collapse with only ever having two women on the roster come close to defeating her.
After hunting Scarlet down brand to brand, Rosemary took up a vow to bring the pirate captain to justice. She devoted her career as well as her branding as a pirate hunter to chasing the champion and other similar villainous members of the roster down. In the end she was one of two women who came close to finally dethroning Scarlet, but a mid match mishap delayed their final confrontation. Before they ever fought again, the company went under.
Reigning tag team champions within Cutlass, though they came across as afterthoughts in their roster. They served as the personal things to "The Matriarch", leader of a faction called The Indomitable Empire. The defacto heel power faction in Cutlass, they tangled with nearly all members of the roster including being throttled by Scarlet and showing down with the Pirate Hunter herself.

The Wulfen Warrior Beowulf
Signed to a joint contract with Cutlass to allow him to perform marquee matches with the federation's top talent while still being allowed to wrestle abroad. His surprise inclusion and subsequent feuds earned a massive spike in revenue, merchandise sales and online popularity, although still not enough to salvage the company's shady business practices and safe them from going under soon after his departure.

Madame Viola
Signed on with Cutlass to gain fame and fortune for the private goal of revenge. She was a middling wrestler who always just a few mistakes or mishaps away from maintaining a perfect record. Fortune seemed to curse her. She held no associations with any factions and was renowned to do anything to win.

Re: Cutlass Wrestling [Former Members]
Caroline, the Fair Maiden, aka the Damsel in Distress
After initially failing to impress Friction's talent scouts, it became clear that Caroline would need more substantial experience in a promotion with a culture similar to the one she was trying to break into. After catching an opportunity to sign with Cutlass as they were beginning to expand their roster, Caroline would join the company for a span of about seven months.
Initially, Caroline's rookie status and her vociferous objections to any participation in erotic match types made her an unpopular woman to both management and a sizable chunk of the other wrestlers. This would be reflected in the character she played and the outcomes of her matches, with Caroline spending most of her Cutlass career languishing in jobber territory. This suited her surprisingly well, however, affording her great experience in taking her lumps gracefully, whether it was taking the devastating slams of Captain Scarlet, or being stretched to her limit by Vanguard's submissions.
- A longer history, mostly concerning the Maiden's relationship with Vanguard:
- Caroline's role in the promotion's story followed her character's journey as an antagonist to, and frequent victim of, the Indomitable Empire. Established as The Fair Maiden (or the Damsel in Distress, as her opponents often called her), she played a member of the nobility of a smaller and much weaker kingdom, facing constant threat of conquest. The story took a lot of inspiration from the archaic tropes associated with Shakespeare's era, with a smattering of Game of Thrones' flavor to capitalize on the show's popularity. Caroline's opposition to hentai matches was also worked into the plot. The Fair Maiden was a shy, chaste woman, constantly railing against the Empire's use of sex to subjugate its opponents and upholding herself as a woman of virtue. With few skilled allies, however, The Fair Maiden would never pose a serious threat to the Matriarch's rule, protected as she was by her Vanguard, who stood strong against every threat the Empire faced.
Per Caroline's demand, The Fair Maiden was never a direct participant in any matches that allowed for hentai, though she could occasionally be spotted watching from the sidelines, her character's presence required even if she wasn't there to wrestle. Second-hand embarrassment for the women who melted in Vanguard's embrace was usually the worst outcome, but during a fateful tag match, Caroline made the mistake of cheating on behalf of her team, interfering from the sidelines by tripping Lexi when she tried to rebound off the ropes for a splash. Silently resolving to pay Caroline back for the act, the two women refused to let her leave after the match was over, dragging her into the ring for an unplanned scene that would become the best and worst moment of the young woman's Cutlass career.
Lexi trapped the Maiden in her dreaded finisher, the stockades, while Mackenzie grabbed a mic to chastise her for cheating and wonder aloud what they could do to punish her for it. With Lexi teasing Caroline's vulnerable crotch and threatening to go even further, Caroline panicked and begged for Mackenzie to show mercy and call Lexi off. Holding the mic to Caroline's lips, Mackenzie easily extracted an apology, and after some added groveling for good measure, the two women finally released Caroline and watched her flee in terror.
This humiliation sparked an in-character rivalry between Lexi and Caroline that helped move her out of the roster's background. It also forced her to confront her long suppressed desires, with the thought of being trapped and ravished by Vanguard never leaving her after that. Each subsequent encounter with them, whether wrestling for the audience or talking in private, would strip a little more of her apprehension away.
With Mackenzie occupied by her own rivalries, Lexi would remain the larger fixture in Caroline's story, an inscrutable and clever opponent that Caroline often struggled to match. The Azure Shield was observant enough to see past Caroline's attempts to hide how flustered she would get whenever she shared the ring with Mackenzie or herself, especially when Caroline was on the losing end of things. She had discovered a budding masochist inside the shy southerner, nurtured by her wrestling career.
Lexi's observations were always put to great effect, allowing her to get inside the blonde's head and attack her where she was weakest. With a noticeable amount of sexual tension building between the two, Caroline and Lexi eventually worked out a conclusion to this story arc that both of them were comfortable with. In character, Caroline would be taken captive by the Empire and confronted with a demand to abandon her claim to power and offer her hand to the Azure Shield in an arranged marriage that would unite their kingdoms. Caroline would resist this, facing off against Lexi and Mackenzie in a climactic “Escape the Castle” match where she would attempt to flee the castle and escape her fate. Failure would see Vanguard catching the Fair Maiden and dragging her into the castle's torture chamber, where they would surely break her will to resist the Matriarch's demands.
Before the match could ever take place, however, Caroline received a call from Japan. Friction had just announced plans to expand their roster to accompany the brand's growing popularity, and some of her better spots with Vanguard had reached their talent scouts. She received an offer to sign with the promotion. The next day, she broke the news to Lexi and Mackenzie that she was leaving.
Why exactly Caroline felt so compelled to cut and run that she wouldn't record one final match is unknown, but the most popular fan theory was management attempting to renege on their agreement not to involve Caroline in explicit sexual content. There was a lot of pressure from fans to see Lexi consummate her arranged marriage with Caroline after the conclusion of their match. Caroline's contract forbade hentai matches, but a loophole regarding the definition of “match” may have allowed them to add the Maiden's dungeon encounter with Vanguard to the show, instead of leaving it to audience imagination. Whatever the reason may have been, the Maiden's sudden departure resulted in a hasty rewrite that would leave The Azure Aegis standing at the altar. The Fair Maiden had chosen to run from her destiny, evading capture and fleeing in the middle of the night.
For Caroline, missing the chance to finish spinning her story as the Fair Maiden was a source of lasting regret, but the sudden collapse of Cutlass a few months later only proved to Caroline that she had made the right choice for herself. Now wrestling under her own name in Tokyo, it didn't escape her attention when Vanguard resurfaced in Kyoto, making a debut that had Caroline struggling to watch through the slits between her fingers. It was tempting to try getting in touch with them again, but they seemed so ruthless now. How would they respond to the girl that had abandoned them, assuming they remembered her at all?

Re: Cutlass Wrestling [Former Members]
Beginning her career in Cutlass Wrestling toward the end of the promotion's run, The Barbarian thrilled fans with impressive feats of strength and her seemingly undying love of combat. Her early winning streak led to her one and only opportunity to challenge Scarlet Farley for the Heavyweight Championship, but she was demolished by the pirate captain in only a few minutes. Inspired by Scarlet's ability, Saoirse became determined to reach that level herself, but Cutlass closed its doors several months later, just as the Barbarian's journey was beginning.
