Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Totally forgot to talk about NJPW's U.S. shows from a little over a week ago, but here it is for whoever's interested.
- Night 1:
- So I was originally gonna be at this one, and the pre-show meet & greet. But travel plans got screwed about a week before the show, and the trip was canceled. Was bummed as hell over that, but still had fun watching it at home.
1. 10-Man tag match: Briscoe Bros., Will Ospreay & RPG Vice vs Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, Marty Scurll, Young Bucks) - Fun but pretty brief opener. Lots of dives all around. Scurll and Ospreay did some familiar spots. Nothing amazing, but a fine way to kick off the show. (**1/2)
2. 8-Man tag match: Jushin Liger, Volador Jr. Dragon Lee & Titan vs L.I.J (SANADA, EVIL, BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi) - Liked this more than the opener. The CMLL guys were great, as was L.I.J's teamwork. And it's always awesome when Dragon Lee and Hiromu are in the ring together. (***)
3. U.S. title tourney 1st round: Jay Lethal vs Hangman Page - Don't care at all about either of these guys, and this was easily the worst match of the tourney. Even with that said, it was still pretty decent. (***)
4. U.S. title tourney 1st round: Juice Robinson vs Zack Sabre Jr. - Never knew I wanted to see this match until it happened. Both guys worked hard and put on a great match that I've even seen some go as far as to call the best match of either show. Not sure I'm not in that boat, but it was great regardless. (****)
5. 8-Man tag match: Hiroshi Tanahashi, KUSHIDA, Jay White & David Finlay vs Billy Gunn, Yoshitatsu, Yohei Komatsu & Sho Tanaka - Nice seeing White, Komatsu & Tanaka back in an NJPW ring again. They all did great. Yoshitatsu got booed, but actually looked immensely happy at the fact that the crowd was reacting to him at all for once, which was kinda hilarious to see. Tanahashi did almost nothing, though under the circumstances that wasn't much of a surprise. (**1/2)
6. IWGP Tag Team Championship No-DQ Match: G.O.D vs War Machine - The no-dq stip didn't seem to mean much considering people almost never get dq'ed in NJPW anyway. Match was fine though, and the title change was a pleasant surprise to me. (***)
7. U.S. title tourney 1st round: Tomohiro Ishii vs Tetsuya Naito - Best match of night 1 imo. Every Ishii/Naito match ever has been great and this was no exception. (****1/2)
8. U.S. title tourney 1st round: Michael Elgin vs Kenny Omega - To me the previous match beat this one just barely. Elgin and Omega have great chemistry and it showed really well here again. (****1/4)
9. IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Kazuchika Okada vs Cody - There was a brief moment in this where I'll admit they genuinely made me believe Cody was gonna win. But aside from a few nice spots/sequences, the match was nothing special. If anything it just highlighted how out of place Cody is in NJPW. Wasn't terrible, but I highly doubt Cody will ever have a better NJPW match than this, and this wasn't anything too special. (***1/2)
- Night 2:
- 1. 6-Man tag match: Jushin Liger, KUSHIDA & David Finlay vs Yoshitatsu, Yohei Komatsu & Sho Tanaka - Not gonna lie, I literally don't remember a single thing from this match lol, so no point in rating it. (N/A)
2. U.S. title tourney semifinal: Jay Lethal vs Kenny Omega - Had really low expectations going in. Lethal had a rib injury, and I figured they'd give just Kenny a quick and easy win. Instead the two put on a surprisingly great match that made it seem on several occasions that Lethal might actually win. Way better than I expected it would be. (****)
3. U.S. title tourney semifinal: Tomohiro Ishii vs Zack Sabre Jr. - ZSJ actually made me think he was gonna make Ishii tap out. That in and of itself is goddamn amazing. The match was dramatic and exciting, and they're gonna meet again in the G1! HYPED!!! (****1/2)
4. 10-Man tag match: Juice Robinson, Jay White, Volador Jr., Dragon Lee & Titan vs L.I.J (Naito, SANADA, EVIL, BUSHI & Hiromu) - L.I.J is always fun to watch, and once again we got Dragon Lee/Hiromu, even if just briefly. Nothing worth going out of your way to see, but a fun 10-12 minutes. (***)
5. 6-man tag match: Michael Elgin & War Machine vs Bullet Club (Hangman Page & G.O.D) - Elgin's a great fit with War Machine. Lots of cool bits of teamwork with them. Hangman Page picked up the win, and it's since been announced he and Cody will challenge for the tag titles. Not entirely sure how I feel about that, but this match was pretty decent overall. (***)
6. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Young Bucks vs RPG Vice - If you don't like the Bucks, you won't like this match. Felt more like a PWG match and any of their matches w/ NJPW. That said, there's lots of impressive high flying antics and creative double team moves. If that kinda thing interests you, you'll likely love this. After the match Rocky announced the team would be disbanding so Barretta could move up to the heavyweight division. Sad there's no more RPG Vice, but I'll be really interested to see how Barretta does as a HW. (****)
7. 8-Man tag team match: Kazuchika Okada, Briscoe Bros. & Will Ospreay vs Bullet Club (Cody, Fale, Yujiro & Scurll) - Most of the match was pretty forgettable to me. But there was a really cool finishing sequence that led to Cody putting Ospreay away. (***)
8. IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Billy Gunn - Literally everyone knew this was gonna suck, and it did. I don't get why this match happened. There were so many better options for opponents for Tanahashi, even if all they wanted was an easy, pre-G1 defense. I'm just glad it's over and I don't have to think about it anymore. (*1/2)
9. U.S. title tourney finals: Tomohiro Ishii vs Kenny Omega - Goddamn amazing match. Omega's knee strikes are explosive as hell, and Ishii must've taken at least half a dozen of them. At one point Omega tried to Dragon Suplex Ishii off the apron through a table, and Ishii BIT THE TOP ROPE TO HOLD ON AND RESIST THE SUPLEX. Ishii hit Omega with the One-Winged Angel. Just about everything they did was fantastic. Best match of the weekend imo. (*****)

Oh my, I just hope RR wins next week against Samoa Joe. I am so sick and tired of waiting for the match against Brock Lesnar. I just want it to be over, kind of like waiting at the dentist...

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
His contract is ending after WrestleMania so unless he renews (Which so far he hasn't shown much of an interest in doing, he seems ready to settle down and be a family man) You'll get your wish. Also I'm pretty sure this match will get interrupted by our weekly does of Braun and become a fatal four way.Alexandra wrote:I just want Brock to get bored of wrestling and go away forever. :V

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Brock Lesnar could indeed show a little bit more in the ring. He can do better, he obviously just does not need to and so it is a german suplex festival with the occasional slam then and when. That was absolutely fun when he used it against Cena and in the next matches after that, but it indeed gets old after some years. I am not waiting for him to do the Moonsault from the top rope, but some suplex variety could not hurt either.

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
Lotta saltyness in this thread recently.
So am I the only one who actually enjoyed Great Balls of Fire and Joe vs Lesnar?
WWE finally figured out the formula for 1 on 1 Brock Lesnar matches. No bullshitting around with minor moves or lock ups or whatever, you treat Brock Lesnar as the Final Boss Monster he is, and you fucking smash and attack him with your best shit, right off the bat.
"But Tai, Joe only used like three moves!"
...and they were moves that WWE has shown to be his biggest moves, his impeccable striking, his Uranage slam, and the attempts at the Coquina Clutch.
"But Lesnar only did two moves!"
...yes, and those moves defeated The Undertaker, Cena, Orton, Ambrose, and Batman. Like, Lesnars last two matches have been the most exciting and entertaining of his career, and frankly, I don't subscribe to the "MOAR MOVES EQUALS BEST WRESTLER!" mindset that the indy scene has given everybody.
Like seriously, none of you would have enjoyed wrestling in the 80s. At all. There was like, 6 moves total, and one of them was posing.
As for people being pissed at the ending, bah. I loved it. It's been fucking FOREVER since I've seen a main event end with one finisher. I get that sometimes, on big events, in biggest matches on said big events, having multiple finishers is fun and exciting, but holy shit is it overblown as fuck.
Plus, I love that, rather than just conclusively end Joe there, the story was that Brock basically got lucky as fuck, caught Joe with a desperation F-5, and that was enough of a surprise to keep him down for a 3 count. Also that Ambulance match was fucking awesome, Brauns going places, Braun won, Braun didn't get buried or jobbed out (...which will do NOTHING to keep people from bitching that he was), and Reigns was in complete heel mode on monday, which was enjoyable as fuck to see.
I had fun, I was sports entertained, and so far I'm looking forward to Summer Splash.
ENJOY YA SALT, #HEELTAI OUT!

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
As we are on memory lane already:
The leg drop defeated Sting, Flair, Yokozuna, Earthquake, Seargant Slaughter, the Undertaker and Sid Vicious. Hogan was massively over the first time when he was red and yellow Hogan, although he most of the time did bodyslams and clotheslines in his matches. Does that mean that he just should have done clotheslines and wait until his oponent rolls over for the leg drop? I was a massive Hogan fan when I was young(until he costed Sid Justice, a fellow face and ally at this time, the RR win), but in retrospective I see that he was living from his charisma, kayfabe and intensity alone, he would never get over in an environment that loves workrates, sculpted bodies and scripted promos.
The offense people could show against Cena and Hogan for example was ridiculous. Cena and Hogan were eating damage left and right until they miraculously recovered. A recipe that wins kids over, but any adult sees how this gets old very quickly. The Warrior would have probably been a gimmick to reach more adults. Unbriddled aggression, much less enemy offense, bright colors, rambling promos.
And I am pretty sure that Ricky Steamboat, Randy Savage, Mr Perfect, Bam Bam Bigelow and Sting would disagree with your 6 moves, Tai.
tl,dr: A tired formula is a tired formula, and even a roid ruled decade like the 80s had not only 6 moves.^^

Re: Topic: Wrestling?
I dont get your hogan argument. As you yourself pointed out, Hogan was over as fuck with a limited moveset, and hell, as a heel in the 90s he still got over and drew money.
A varied move set is fine if it has a point and purpose. Lesnars limited moveset is all he needs to have entertaining matches, especially with this new mstch formula for him.
Moves that mean something are great, having more moves for the sake of having more moves is just pointless.
As for njpw caboose, i wasnt talking about them. They are an entirely different style than wwe and i dont like to compare the two
