Eurovision 2016!
Eurovision's first semi-final of 2016 is well underway, so I wanted to make a discussion thread! I love Eurovision, and I'm pretty pumped about it being on American television for the first time on Saturday. This is my fourth Contest, and I wouldn't miss it for almost anything.
So, for my fellow Americans: do you watch Eurovision? If not, what's wrong with you?
For the Europeans: what do you think of your country's song? What are some of your favorite Eurovision songs from the past and throughout history?
For everyone, who are you rooting for? Who do you think is going to win? I just want to find more people to discuss Eurovision with!

Bah, I cant stant it. It could because i am British and Eurovision is just an excuse for Mainland Europe to vote us down because they hate us.
And they wonder why we are thinking of leaving, maybe if they let us win once, or even a top 10, maybe we won't leave xD

It's fantastic. If you like European music—mostly pop, but ultimately with a lot of rock, some folk, and occasionally some other diverse styles and influences—then it can't be beat. It's like the Olympics of music and it's so much fun. The people are all such characters.

Well, to be fair, the British entries the last few years have all sucked, except for Electro Velvet last year. But at least 2013, 2014, and 2016 have been pretty wretched. It does seem like they pound on the U.K. a bit, but that can change with one catchy tune.

Re: Eurovision 2016!
Englebert Humperdink deserved way more than dead last a couple years ago when he performed. Man's been performing for decades and his voice still sounds great. He lost because his style isn't anywhere near the kind of modern "art" pop that always wins Eurovision these days.
Plus, Lordi won in like, 2006, for an incredibly generic rock song, "Hard Rock Hallelujah" which, while Lordi is a decent enough band, (even if their gimmick just rips off GWAR, Alice Cooper, and KISS) was not a song I would call "the best in Europe" unless Europe just had shitty music ten years ago...though hearing whats on EV now, that might be the case.
OH, Those dancing grandma's that did that song "Party For Everybody" a few years back, that was adorable, but got second place to Loreen's "Euphoria", which is about as generic as modern pop can get, but it involved a costume, random pointless dancing, and her moving her arms a lot, so it must, as some have labeled it "the greatest music performance in Eurovision History"
That being said, there ARE good performances to be found (and cheers to Lordi for being the only hard rock act to win the damn thing) and its overall an enjoyable show, even if you aren't into generic euro-pop.
Does Graham Norton still host? He's funny

Re: Eurovision 2016!
I was more than astounded when I heard that the ESC is that big. Like some people already said, it is the glorification of mediocrity and a "let´s vote them because they will vote us" show. Rarely will you find a vote for lets say Sweden for Norway under 8 points.
That all German representatives of the last years brutally sucked does not help the case either, and the one guy to have a serious chance of just a top 10 place because he can really sing did not want to take part. The only excuse for this is the continuous coma of German music in general with Bands like Revolverheld and Silbermond at the top.
