Re: It's finally here, Flyod Mayweather vs Manny Pacquai
Mayweather did indeed outbox Pac. He also happened to avoid getting penalized for all the cheap shots and the times he gave Pac headlocks. But even if he went clean as a whistle, he still would've won by a large margin. There's no doubt, he's the better boxer.
However, not only was it an atrociously boring match, it'll probably be shit for boxing as a sport. Yes, it was super high level technical boxing. But to casual viewers like me and a ton of other people, we've seen the apex and we really don't like it. What's brilliant from a boxing standpoint is complete garbage as entertainment. So, the fight of the century, the most hyped up match of the decade, turns out this way.
We see Mayweather the champ win by what most would perceive as 'running away' and 'throwing weak baby punches'. This goes on for 12 rounds, punctuated by brief periods of Pac punching Mayweather's guard on the ropes or in corners to no effect. Yawn. How sad. This is how the toppest of top tiers fights? Well, fine. All hail Champ Rope-Lean, He Who Camps Corners.
Mayweather's a smart man. Nobody's saying he should be dumb for the sake of making the crowd actually want to sit through the match. Hell, it's his right to piss us off with an overly safe fighting style. But how exactly is that supposed to be good for everybody who is watching for the sake of enjoying a good match? Just thinking about it pisses me off, because Mayweather's got crazy amounts of talent and he uses it to win at our expense. This is his thing. Every time the champ fights, there will be tactical fleeing and passivity until he can tap his opponent over and over again for the decision victory. If that is 'true' boxing, if that is the highest level of skill, then we don't want to see high level fights.
What kind of state is this sport in, when fans would be glad knowing that the top boxer's style can't be replicated? People would love to see another Ali, another Smokin' Joe Frazier or Mike Tyson. What they won't want to see is another Mayweather, dominating fights by jabbing like a baby and clinching like a blanket.

Re: It's finally here, Flyod Mayweather vs Manny Pacquai
Why should they care if people "Got their money's worth" out of the fight or not?
They advertised Manny vs Floyd, you paid for Manny vs Floyd, you got Manny vs Floyd. They didn't go into the fight intending to disappoint people, or excite them or anything. They went in to fight, and they fought. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?
They don't have to listen to the crowd, they don't have to give a shit what the crowd wants or said after the fact.
The event was financially successful, they have your money. Mayweather walked away with a win and a FAT check, and even Manny probably made big money even with losing. Everybody involved made money.
Didn't like the end result? Doesn't matter. Why should anybody involved care? The fighters are moving on to whatever their next fights are, and the companies are looking to take your 100 bucks again at the next event.

The fact that the companies want to keep taking people's money at these events is why they should care if people get their money's worth or not. It's all well and good to say that they've already got your money from this fight, but they still want you to pay for the next one. So...why should we? This sport is clearly a waste of time and money, if second hand accounts of this fight are anything to go by. Once people realize that, how are these events going to stay profitable? It's the same reason that the makers of a film or game franchise need to care whether you liked the latest installment or not. If you didn't, you won't buy the next one.
You are right, Tai, the people who profited off this fight don't need to care about what their fans think, but their fans don't have to keep paying them.

They'll stay profitable as long as some hype man can go "Okay, Mayweather danced around the last 49 guys, but this time it'll be different!" Pretty much like a wrestling heel champ, build him up as though he might lose then laugh all the way to the bank when he doesn't. Only charging a lot more for the show as well.

Was this fight really a hundred bucks to watch? That's kind of ridiculous. O.o;

Well, 100$ isn't THAT ridiculous when the vast majority of people involved were at bars or fight parties. It's either getting split up or most people watching aren't actually paying the fee.
That's probably WHY it was so expensive.

The same can be applied to Wrestlemania and that's only $9.99 for individuals.

Re: It's finally here, Flyod Mayweather vs Manny Pacquai
Yeah, NOW. We had wrestlemania parties before and after the network.
But this was more or less boxing' slats hurrah. They needed to charge that much. I'm just saying, for how it's done, 100$ isn't THAT bad, really. The people that wanted to see it and not pay that, or only pay a part of it were going to be able to do that. At least they got a full fight instead of a first round knockout or something.

Re: It's finally here, Flyod Mayweather vs Manny Pacquai
I dunno, if Mayweather or Pacquai had gotten knocked out in the first 15 seconds people would have probably have been more positive. Rousey's a draw in MMA and her combined fight time is probably less than that one match.

That is way different >.>
People go in expecting to see barely a round's worth of action with her and MMA in general is much more conducive to short fights than boxing.
