Re: Finally Got Up the Guts to Join this Site
Huh, this topic is getting weird again. As much as I wish for Caroline to be like Toph or the blind samurai, I'm pretty sure superpowers are still limited to the Fur and Feathers section.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone, I appreciate the honesty even though most of the criticism was negative. A lot of you feel that total blindness is too extreme a disability for me to saddle my character with, and believe that it would cause too much friction in an RP setting. Valid concerns, so I understand why people are so skeptical.
I would, however, like to save the original concept I had for my character, if possible. My original intent with Caroline was to show that a wrestler can overcome a physical disability in a sports setting. It does not, however, have to be as extreme as total blindness, so I messaged Tatyina with some possible changes I could make to get Caroline approved for combat. Tatyina informed me that, although she believes I should RP a less complicated character first to get my sea legs, so to speak, she would allow Caroline to compete if I scaled her down a bit. Now I'd like to know what the rest of you think of my possible changes. The options I came up with are:
1. As I mentioned before, I can alter her to only have blindness in one eye instead of both. It would still cause a problem for her in the ring due to reduced range of vision and depth perception issues, but it's not as extreme as my first idea.
2. Caroline could suffer from some form of vision impairment that doesn't go as far as total blindness, such as cataracts or glaucoma. There's a condition known as hyperopia, or "far sightedness" that causes people's vision to fail over long distances, which would perfectly explain why she was driven to become a wrestler rather than some other sport (which take place over large fields instead of tiny wrestling rings).
3. Coal processing plants such as the one Caroline lives near can cause a host of health problems, so Caroline need not suffer from visual impairment at all. She could suffer from some other form of cancer, with malignancy varying according to how far Tatyina is willing to let me go. Or she could suffer from some form of mercury poisoning, due to runoff from the plant. The options are pretty generous, I just need to find one that the other RPers will accept.
Let me know what you think of these suggestions. Finally, Tatyina's suggestion that I shelve Caroline in favor of another character has forced me to consider the option of adding a second character to my roster. I wasn't expecting to need a second one so soon, and I don't have any bright ideas for a new character at the moment. So, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on that front? Let me know.

Sometimes I think certain characters have mutant healing factors, but yeah. >_>

Call it 'constructive'. More PC.

At the risk of being a smart ass, I think that's 'myopia' and 'nearsightedness'. 'Far sighted' is when you have trouble seeing things closed up. And I'd go with that. Myopia, I mean. But I'm biased, because I have it. >_>

I'd still say there's probably a better way to distinguish your character than straddling her with some kind of handicap. I would suggest focusing on the creativity of your actual play with others, that's what really counts, imo.
Whatever floats your boat though, I guess.

Thanks for correcting me. Since total blindness didn't work out, a severe case of myopia is probably what I'll wind up going with. I think that would work just fine for RPing purposes.

I'm sure there are plenty of different ways to distinguish my character, although I wouldn't call any one of them the best. Truth be told, I lurked on this site for a long time before I joined and noticed that, despite dozens of characters between all the members of this site, none of the characters seemed to struggle with their health at all, unless you consider sadism to be a medical disorder, since it's rampant among the heels of AFW. I wonder if there are any other character quirks I can come up with that haven't been done to death by the other members already.
Thanks again for the constructive criticism everyone, if I need more help I'll probably take it to the improvement/critique thread.
